Vocabulary for this Unit:
• landforms - physical features on the earth's surface
• weathering - the process of breaking rocks into silt, sand, clay, and other tiny pieces of sediment
• erosion - the process of moving sediment from one place to another
• deposition - process of dropping, or depositing, sediment to a new location
• mass movement - the downhill movement of rock and soil because of gravity
• crust - the outer layer, made of rock, approximately 7 miles deep
• mantle - made of rock, then becomes very hot, thick liquid, approximately 1800 miles deep
• outer core - made of molten iron, approximately 1300 miles deep
• inner core - made of solid iron, extremely hot, approximately 800 miles deep
• plate - rigid blocks of the crust and upper mantle
• magma - hot, soft rock from the earth's mantle
• lava - magma that reaches Earth's surface
• volcano - a mountain formed by lava and ash
• earthquake - shaking of the ground caused by the sudden release of energy in the Earth's crust
• seismograph - an instrument used to measure seismic waves from earthquakes
• faults - places where pieces of the crust move
• continental drift - the theory of how Earth's continents move over its surface
• Pangea - the name given to Earth when joined into one "supercontinent"
• fossil - remains or traces of past life found in some rocks
• ridge - underwater mountain range formed by plate tectonics
• trench - a narrow, elongate, v-shaped depression in the ocean floor; deepest parts of the ocean
• glacier - large land-bound bodies of ice; must be moving, or show evidence of having moved in the past.
• tsunami - a giant wave caused by earthquakes and volcanoes
